INTRODUCING THE FOUR THINKING STRATEGIES
For the first time, we’ve made sense of the four Thinking Strategies that we’re all built to use:
The systematic and rational thinking that is evidence-based through data, facts or analysis. This is about being deliberate, methodical and led by reason.
The fast, experience-based thinking that has often been studied in life and death situations. This thinking draws on past relevant experience to immediately make sense of a situation and to rapidly deploy everything known about it in an instant.
The divergent or associative thinking more in keeping with Eastern tradition. This is about finding ideas and inspirations from one area of life and applying them to another, to make new connections.
The lateral or strategic intuitive thinking that is largely unconscious and feels like it happens out of the blue, as an ‘ah-ha!’ moment. This is where ideas that apparently seem unconnected, suddenly come together in an instant.
The four thinking strategies don’t compete against each other, they connect and work together.
There’s a reason that Expert Thinking and Depth Thinking are at opposite ends of the same linear (vertical) line, because they are both essentially about 'pattern recognition':
- Depth Thinking is about looking for patterns consciously, methodically and systematically
- Expert Thinking is about recognising patterns rapidly, subconsciously and based on what you’ve seen before.
Likewise, Link Thinking and Click Thinking are connected on the same lateral (horizontal) line because they are both united in bringing about 'pattern creation'. They are the strategies we use to bring about new ideas which aren’t reliant on what’s gone before.
- Link Thinking is about creating new patterns and possibilities consciously and deliberately
- Click Thinking is about new patterns falling into place subconsciously and often seemingly out of the blue.
The connections don’t stop there. Depth Thinking and Link Thinking are themselves united by the fact that they are both analytical thinking strategies, while Expert Thinking and Click Thinking are united by being intuitive thinking strategies.
Understanding how the four Thinking Strategies fit and work together is often the first step to realising that conflict can exist simply because some people are responding intuitively while others are responding analytically to the same information. It can even expose a conflict that can occur within ourselves when we are tussling between intuitive and analytical responses.
